WMC 2016 - Renowned international specialists to debate sustainability in mining.

The latest innovations in business sustainability and those that are currently in the research and test phases will be at the centre of a series of unprecedented debates in the international mineral sector. The stage will be Rio de Janeiro (RJ), which will host the World Mining Congress (WMC 2016) between the 18th and 21st October, and the participants renowned Brazilian and foreign specialists, in addition to high-level executives from mining companies that operate in Brazil and overseas. The Brazilian Mining Association - IBRAM is organizing the 24th edition of the congress.

Among the highlights of the programme dedicated to sustainability in the sector are the panels: "Partnership for the development and future of mining", featuring Kulvir Singh Gill, Senior Principal at Clareo Partners and Senior Collaborator at the Kellogg Innovation Network (USA); and "Mining and the Objectives of Sustainable Development", with the participation of Casper Sonesson, Global Policy Advisor for Extractive Industries at UNDP, in New York.

According to Kulvir Singh Gill, mineral resources are finite. "It's essential to think sustainably when the topic is mining and the WMC will provide an excellent opportunity to share new knowledge and discuss scientific advances related to the subject. It's necessary to consider the global context in which the mining companies operate. And there is nothing better than inviting various players of the sector to reflect on and gain an understanding of the global scenario and the way in which society is involved in mining. This panel shall explore social, economic and environmental aspects that are crucial to mining activities. We need to think of a way in which companies can enable the equal distribution of benefits to all those involved", he states.

For IBRAM's Director of Environmental Issues, Rinaldo Mancin, long-term sustainability in mining is already being discussed and the WMC proves that it continues to be an important issue on the agenda of the main debates in the sector. "The aspects that require the most attention of international executives and investors are innovation and the constant improvement of the sustainable practices applied not only to production but also to the other industrial processes", he affirms. In his opinion, innovation and sustainability are fundamental to the development of any segment of modern mining activity.

With the theme "Mining in a World of Innovation", the 24th edition of the WMC shall incorporate a technical-work presentation space, an exhibition area and the congress area itself.

The World Mining Congress 2016 is, as of writing, sponsored by the mining companies Vale (Diamond), Votorantim Metais (Diamond), Sindicato Nacional da Indústria da Extração do Ferro e Metais Básicos – Sinferbase (Gold), CBMM (Silver), Anglo American (Bronze), Hydro (Bronze), Kinross (Bronze), AngloGold Ashanti (Special) and Gerdau (Steel).
