Professor Magnus Ericsson, a consultant and professor of mineral economics at the Luleå University of Technology - Sweden, will attend this edition of the World Mining Congress.

He is one of the most respected specialists in world mining for studies and analyses and will be one of the guest speakers at the 24th edition of the World Mining Congress (WMC 2016). The event, organized by the Brazilian Mining Institute - IBRAM, will take place between the 18th and 21st October 2016 in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

On the 21st October, Magnus will give a talk entitled "Global Mining - when will we see the light at the end of the tunnel?”, sharing his vision of the future of mining. "The long-term perspective for the mineral sector is excellent. The demand for metals is related to economic development and improvements in the quality of life of lower social classes. This process is currently underway and will continue at least for another decade, even if the growth rate is less than that of the previous 10 years. Even with the increase in recycling and reuse processes, there will still be a big demand for new mineral extraction," he states.

The Professor also highlights that there are four metals, which are fundamental to global economic development. "Iron, copper, phosphate and potassium will be the commodities of the future. The first two are indispensable for all economic growth and are needed in large quantities. The last two are essential for fertilizer production, which are crucial to increasing agricultural production and feeding the world population", he adds.

In his opinion, various other metals will be required over the next few years due to their specific properties and thus importance in the fields of electronics and technology, but the volume of rare metals will be less than the four previously mentioned. Magnus believes that the WMC represents an excellent opportunity to discuss the future of mining, particularly due to the attendance of important players from around the world.

According to IBRAM CEO, José Fernando Coura, the presence of Professor Magnus Ericsson adds even more prestige to the WMC. "Magnus is extremely well-known for his expertise and we have the chance to have him here as a guest speaker, covering the mineral sector from a different angle, especially for those who recognize the importance of innovation for the future of the mineral industry. The chance to hear Magnus Ericsson is one of the big opportunities that the WMC will offer during this edition in Brazil", he states.

About the WMC

The World Mining Congress takes place every three years and is led by a secretariat with the status of an organisation associated with the United Nations, which is part of the Central Mining Institute, located in the city of Katowice, Poland. The goal of the event is to promote and support cooperation, both technically and scientifically, for national and international progress in mining and mineral resource development; establish a world exchange network on mineral science, technology, economics, health and safety in mining activities, and environmental protection.

The 24th edition of the WMC, whose theme is "Mining in a World of Innovation", will incorporate a technical-work presentation space, an exhibition area and the congress area itself.

Partnerships with various entities, institutions, associations, and media channels contribute to the success of the 24th edition of the World Mining Congress. The event shall receive special support from Global Business Reports (GBR), and institutional support from Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT), Associação Paulista de Engenheiros de Minas (APEMI), Associação Baiana de Engenheiro de Minas (ABEM), Bauma, Banco Nacional do Desenvolvimento (BNDES), Centro Tecnológico Mineral (CETEM), Centro Universitário Luterano de Palmas (CEULP/ULBRA), Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), CRU Group, Departamento de Engenharia de Minas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (DEMIN/UFMG), Escola de Engenharia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFGRS), Federation of International Mining and Mineral Resources (FAB), Federação das Indústrias do Estado de Santa Catarina (FIESC), Federação das Indústrias do Estado de Minas Gerais (FIEMG), Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos (FINEP), Flogen Technologies Inc., Gecamin, Instituto Aço Brasil (IaBr), International Social Security Association (ISSA), Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo (Poli – USP), Sindicato da Indústria Mineral do Estado de Minas Gerais (Sindiextra), Sindicato Nacional da Indústria da Extração do Ferro e Metais Básicos (Sinferbase), Sindicato das Indústrias Minerais do Estado do Pará (Simineral), TCS BRASIL 2016, Universidade Federal de Campina Grande (UFCG), Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP), Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Vereinigung Rohstoffe und Bergbau (VRB), Secretaria de Geologia, Mineração e Transformação Mineral do Ministério de Minas e Energia (MME), Secretaria de Desenvolvimento Tecnológico e Inovação do Ministério de Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação (MCTI).
